Implant Restoration Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are posts that are surgically placed in your lower or upper jaw bone and are made of titanium and other dental materials. These posts serve as sturdy anchors for new replacement teeth, such as crowns, bridges, and dentures.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

If your natural teeth are damaged or missing, you can reap numerous benefits from getting dental implants, such as:

  • Improved self-esteem
  • A beautiful, restored smile
  • Improved clarity when speaking
  • The ability to chew properly
  • A reduced chance of shifting teeth

Dr. Kirby lets you know if you’re a good candidate for dental implants after a thorough consultation at his office.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants may be a good option for you if you:

  • Have healthy gums
  • Have a jawbone that’s reached its full growth potential
  • Don’t smoke
  • Are unwilling or unable to wear dentures
  • Have adequate bone in your jaw to anchor implants
  • Have missing teeth
  • Don’t have a health condition that interferes with healing

You must also be willing to commit to the several months it takes to surgically place the dental implants and then fully heal from the surgery.

What should I expect when getting dental implants?

The process of placing dental implants usually consists of three separate steps, which include:

  • An Oral Surgeon or Periodontist surgically attaches an implant to your jaw bone.
  • Over several months, the bone surrounding the implant heals and grows around the dental implant.
  • Dr. Kirby fabricates abutments which protrude from the implants and support crowns, bridges, or dentures which are made to fit over the abutments.

If your jaw bone isn’t strong enough or is too thin, you might require bone grafting prior to the dental implant surgery to ensure your bone is strong enough to support them. You also may need to eat soft foods while waiting for the bone grafts or dental implants to heal.

Various bone graft materials are used, such as bone from another location in your body or synthetic bone. It might take several months for the transplanted bone to grow and heal prior to implant placement.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants may last 25 years or longer if you care for them properly. Brush your teeth twice daily and floss once a day. Attend regular professional teeth cleaning appointments and consider a mouthguard if you grind or clench your teeth.
