How Long Should I Brush?

You probably have heard Dr. Martin or your hygienist recommend that you brush two minutes in your visit to have your teeth cleaned. Or you have heard the recommendation of a Sonicare toothbrush. Here are a few reasons why.

In a recent study through the American Dental Hygienists' Association, it was shown that brushing is a critical step in reducing plaque build-up and the risk of plaque-associated diseases.

"Further studies examing tooth brushing time demonstrate that the use of powered toothbrushes with timing or pacing devices further improved overall time spent brushing compared to manual brushing alone." It was reported that, "while only 17 percent of manual toothbrush users meet the two-minute brushing time recommendation, 66 % of powered toothbrush users were two minute compliant" Brushing for 2 minutes removed 26% more plaque than brushing 45 seconds. Better plaque removal was seen with increased brushing times. Brushing for 180 seconds (3 minutes) removed 55 % more plaque than brushing for 30 seconds."

Take some time for dental health. Invest a few minutes a day and it will make a difference. Also, remember to visit your hygienist for regular cleanings, and choose a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Dr. Martin recommends running your Sonicare for two cycles for extra care. If you have any questions on proper use, ask at your next visit.
